Frequently Ask Questions
What to consider when installing a solar power panel at your home?
- Available space on the roof and strength of the roof
- The amount of light that the roof gets
- Selection of a reliable institution to install a solar power system
Do solar power systems increase home value?
Yes, several studies have highlighted that having a solar power system can increase the home value of your property. A property with an already installed solar panel system is often valued higher than similar house without one, as it can be seen as an attractive feature, especially by potential buyers.
Do I need special permission for solar panel installation in my roof?
No permission is required for an off-grid solar panel system which is not connected to the grid. However, for a grid-connected solar PV system, it is necessary to get permission from CEB/LECO and follow the right procedure for approvals.
Our team at Hayleys Solar will aid you in the entire process of receiving the necessary permissions.
How much does it cost to install solar panels?
The cost for the installation of solar panels varies due to numerous factors, including the brand/ model of solar panels of your choice, the capacity of the solar PV system required, the type of roof you have and the angle at your roof is installed, labour costs and so on.

Are there bank loans for solar panels in Sri Lanka?
Most banks in Sri Lanka offer special discounts and loan facilities for the purchase of solar power systems as well as inverters and battery backup systems. Contact Hayleys Solar team interest-free easy payment plan options.
How many hours of sunlight do solar panels need?
Solar panels work best in direct sunlight, but, despite popular belief, they can also work on cloudy days and in partial shade. This is because photovoltaic (PV) panels create energy by using light particles called photons, which are present in both direct and indirect sunlight, allowing solar panels to work in both settings.
Regardless of the solar panels’ capacity to operate under low light settings, you will get the most out of your solar panels if they receive a reasonable amount of direct sunlight every day. On average, your solar panels need 4 sun hours to run optimally, which is roughly 4kW per 1kWp per day.
What are the effects of shade?
Although solar panels may theoretically operate under low light conditions, a little shade can affect a solar panel’s power output drastically. Shade from a “soft” source such as a distant tree branch or cloud can usually limit the quantity of light reaching the solar panel’s cells, but shade from “hard” sources such as waste or bird droppings on the top of the panel can completely block light from reaching solar cells.
If even only 1% of a photovoltaic solar panel is in the shade, it is possible to lose 50-80% of the power production from your entire solar plant. If enough cells are hard-shaded, the module will not convert any energy. In fact, solar panel shading can gradually drain energy from your entire system over time.
How do I know my roof is strong enough to set up a solar panel?
The average-sized solar system, including panels and mounting frames, can weigh about 15kg per square meter, which wouldn’t create any significant damage to the roof. However, our team at Hayleys Solar will evaluate all factors before the installation of the solar PV system and ensure no damage is done in the process.
How much energy will it generate?
Once you know the solar output of the panel (measured in Watts) and the number of peak sun hours per day (in hours) in your area, you can estimate how much electricity a solar panel produces.

What happens if there is a power cut?
The grid-tied inverter in a Solar PV system alone won’t work during a power outage – but when paired with a battery backup solution, it can.
As your solar panel is connected to the grid, most solar installations will shut off during a power cut to ensure that it doesn’t feed live electricity into the power lines. However, if you have a battery backup system connected to your solar panels, you will be able to use your solar energy during a power cut.
How long do solar panels last?
According to industry standards, the efficient lifespan expectancy of solar panels ranges from 25-30 years. However, a solar panel won’t die after 20-30 years, rather, its power output will gradually decrease from its designed capacity of 85%. Solar panels are likely to continue to work for many decades, given they aren’t physically damaged by extreme weather, wind, debris or any other external factors.
Do solar panels need maintenance?
Typically, solar panels will work for many years and don’t normally require much maintenance. However, undertaking regular maintenance will ensure your solar panel system is operating at its best efficiency.
Over time, dust and debris are likely to build up on your solar panels, which will compromise the performance of your solar panel system.
Reach the Hayleys Solar maintenance team and get your solar efficiency re-fulfilled. We provide complete maintenance services irrespective of whether we installed the panel or not.
How often should solar panels be serviced?
In general, solar panels are recommended a maintenance every two to four times a year (suggested every 6 months a year).
